Hi there!

I am a passionate web designer & developer who creates beautiful experiences.

About

It's me!

Greetings! My name is Melissa Brugh (pronounced "brew" like "brewing delicious beer") and I have 5 years of professional experience and 16 years of enthusiasm for web technologies.

I graduated in 2007 from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Art in Digital Media and have both freelanced and worked for design agencies throughout my career. My favorite things about this field are that it is ever changing and always exciting to work in!

Currently I am a Senior Interface Designer at an innovative company that creates and manages private web and mobile applications for government agencies and correctional facilities. My main responsibilities involve designing rich user experiences for the interfaces of our internal apps. Fancy way of saying I get to play with some cutting-edge stuff.

My other hobbies include knitting & crocheting, crafting with paper things, reading dystopian fiction, discovering tasty new foods and eateries, and (my absolute favorite) playing video games like World of Warcraft, The Secret World, and more!

Work

I absolutely love to work with PHP, CSS3, HTML5, and JavaScript libraries to invent clean and imaginative applications for the web. There is always something new to learn and that inspires me daily to always be passionate about my career.

Work Blog Redesign :· February 2013

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • jQuery
  • Wordpress
  • Design

I created this blog to house my ramblings about the web development world and other geeky things.

The design is minimalistic to keep the focus on the content of the articles and also somewhat matches the look and feel of my portfolio to be cohesive.

I recently redesigned my gaming blog, a place where I babble on about my favorite games and all the adventures within them!

The overall theme is dark and weathered, with lots of cool textures and gradients. What I love most about the color scheme is that it makes any included screenshots pop brightly against the background.

Web Presence Portal :· January 2013

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • jQuery
  • Design

I created this to be a sort of "launch pad" for my favorite social network profiles and other websites/blogs that I run.

Since my usual online moniker is "Kirako" (or various forms thereof) the domain itself also fits the purpose.

Simple Status :· January 2013

  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • CSS3

A minimalistic standalone script built with PHP and MySQL for posting and viewing statuses in 140 character social-network-style.

It was originally developed for a private social network and made to support multiple users, replying, hash tags, cross-posting to Twitter and Facebook, and much more.

The current iteration is a stripped down version of the original script for public use. More features are planned for its future development!

A personal blog that I developed for myself using the Wordpress platform. I've been notorious about constantly re-designing my personal projects, mostly due to the fact that I love to experiment and be challenged.

This design, however, has stuck around for quite a while because I still love the look and feel. It features a mellow color scheme along with a clean and simple user experience. There are also some subtle areas of shiny flair thrown in. ;)

In 2011 I collaborated with a start-up company to create AIR, a ground-breaking user management and networking application for government agencies and correctional facilities.

AIR's coolest feature is a robust tracking system that hooks into mobile devices on both Android and iOS. Since its inception, I've been mostly involved with the internal back-end side of the app.

The provided screenshots are some of the features I've been particularly responsible for. I am prohibited by the company from publicly displaying additional information.

The Quilting Bee is a non-profit private social network for pixel artists and web enthusiasts. I took over as lead developer in 2011 and have been collaborating with other team members to continue evolving the community.

The current version features the following custom-built systems using PHP and MySQL: status posting, forums, calendar, pixel avatar generator, achievements, points earning & rewards, pixel item shops, interactive games, and much more.

Hillside Honey :· December 2010

  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • Design

I have family that own a honey farm in Kansas and when the business was transferring hands they needed a quick website to keep everything running during the transition period.

I created a simple CMS in PHP to allow them to manage products and upload photos. The website also featured a dynamic ordering form that was populated via a MySQL database.

My father passed away in October of 2010 and I built this website to memorialize his life and share my memories of him.

It showcases a music video, lightbox photo gallery, and guestbook system.

I had a lot of fun designing the website for my wedding! Not only was it a place for guests to find out information, it was also full of fun facts and history about me and my husband.

It featured a custom blog, interactive maps of all the wedding venues, and a FAQ page for visitors to submit questions directly to us.

Website is no longer online.

A series of themes I created and implemented for an application that provided help with record clearing and background checks. The app allowed for resellers to sign up and redistribute the product via a customizable web portal.

Website is now an internal application.
